Forcing Interlock Devices on Everyone?

November 18th, 2007 · No Comments

The blog of DWI.com reports The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, is working with safe driving advocates like ‘Mothers Against Drunk Driving’ in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related vehicular deaths.  This comes as no great suprise seeing as MADD is one of the most powerful lobbiests this country has ever seen.

Citing only modest gains over the past ten years in the reduction of drunk driving deaths, The US DOT is pushing for a law enforcement crackdown and is supporting a nationwide campaign to mandate installation of ignition interlock devices in vehicles.

MADD has been advocating the use of the vehicle disabling devices as a main deterent to drunk driving. The organization has been instrumental in getting legislation passed in states such as New Mexico, Arizona and Illinois that require the installation of ignition interlock devices for all motorists convicted of DWI. Even first time offenders.

The threat of jail time, fines and other severe punishments had previously been the focus of the campaign against drunk driving. Each year states increase the consequences of a DWI conviction in an effort to dissuade motorists from drinking and driving. The move by federal officials to use technology to prohibit drivers from operating a vehicle when alcohol is detected represents a shift in tactics.

I cannot stress how disturbing the idea of requiring interlock devices on every vehicle is.  An interlock device is expensive, obtrusive, and very difficult to work with.  It gives false readings, cannot distinguish between chemicals, in short would be a horrible device to require every American or Texan to have.  This type of legislation must be fought and opposed.
