Austin Police Drive BAT Mobile

July 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Austin, TX – The Austin Police Department has begun training its officers to drive their new Breath Alcohol Testing Unit.  The unit is actually a bus that will allow APD police officers to determine if drivers are intoxicated.  CAPMetro, the city’s public transit entity, has been training the officers using its bus simulator.

Nicknamed the BAT mobile, the bus is part of the city’s latest efforts to get drunk drivers off the roads.  Texas leads the nation in alcohol related fatalities.  The new BAT mobile was dedicated to two fallen officers who were killed by drunk drivers.  The number of alcohol related fatalities in Austin has remained constant, with an average of 29 per year since 2005.
