From now through August 31, police officers across Pennsylvania will be celebrated Labor Day weekend by ramping up efforts to catch intoxicated drivers. More than 300 police departments will be teaming up with state police forces to spot, pull over and arrest as many drunk drivers as they can. Like most holidays, Labor Day is a time of increased drinking and therefore increased alcohol-related accidents. In 2007 there were 175 alcohol-related car accidents and 11 deaths over Labor Day weekend in Pennsylvania alone.

Michael Anthony Almendarez, age 36, was driving a Jeep Cherokee through Spring Lake, NC, when his car hit a fire hydrant and flipped over around 4:30 Sunday morning. The car crashed into a mobile home before coming to a rest on its passenger side. Almendarez and his passenger received minor injuries; no one inside the mobile home was hurt. Three hours after the wreck, a Breathalyzer test showed Almendarez’s BAC to be .09, above the legal limit. The wreck allegedly caused about $15,000 worth of damage to the home it struck, supposedly taking off the back of the house. Alemndarez and his passenger are both soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg. He has been charged with DWI, careless and reckless driving, and driving without a license. Although he has a Texas license, it had been marked non-renewal.

A Northern Michigan man was arrested recently for operating his riding lawn mower, or lawn tractor, while drunk. He was arrested after he fell off of his motorized lawn mower and injured himself. Thankfully, no shrubs or other people were injured.

Witnesses reported the man after they saw him driving in circles in the middle of an intersection while appearing to be unconscious. He apparently regained both consciousness and control of the lawn tractor before losing consciousness again. The second loss of consciousness resulted in him falling off of the lawn tractor. The riding mower continued until it hit a tree.

The man was arrested on chrages of driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. He has been released from jail on bail of $5,000. He will next appear in court on July 29th. This was his third DWI arrest.

A Tarrant County judge has tossed out the blood evidence the prosecution had in a DWI case recently. While collecting blood is legal, it apparently is not legal to have an officer collect the blood, as opposed to a nurse or doctor.

Following an arrest on suspicion of DWI, a suspect is likely to have blood drawn. While most police departments keep a nurse or doctor on staff to do this, the neighborhood of Dalworthington Gardens has trained its police officers to draw the blood.

In addition to the one case in question, Dalworthington Gardens officers have drawn blood for 29 separate Fort Worth DWI arrests. Officials from Fort Worth say they will no longer use the officers for drawing blood.
